Who really won the War of 1812?

We have all heard the story of the Star Spangle Banner and the victory at the Battle of New Orleans.  We even have songs and heroes from the war.  It is know in the United States as the Second War for Independence.  But in Britain it is referred to as the forgotten war.  Why such a difference?  Why do the Canadians believe they won?  Who were the key players in the events that lead up to this battle of cousins?

Here are our class readings exploring the many voices of the War of 1812:
Much of the discussion in class moved away from who won the war, being that the Treaty of Ghent was a status quo agreement.  So we moved towards asking: Why is the War of 1812 known as many different names?  America's name being the most descriptive: The Second War for Independence.

Here are a two videos that epitomizes the extreme nationalism that still exists today regarding the War of 1812

  4. In my blog I discussed the significant outcomes from the War of 1812 for both the British and Americans. In my opinion they Americans benefitted more because of the long term effects. http://goirishhistory.blogspot.com/2014/11/who-benefitted-more-from-war-of-1812.html

  6. Even though I didn't love the videos, I love that you showed videos with different perspectives of the war the 1812. It really helps to show this war was not a traditional work in that no one is sure who one, or better yet, that everyone is sure that they won. My blog discusses the problems with sectionalism before the war of 1812 and the onslaught of nationalism after the war.http://ngavia77.blogspot.com

  8. In the war of 1812, the US was comically outgunned against britain's world-class navy. To counter their superior numbers, technology, and resources we had to seek alternative methods. Among these methods was attacking and crippling british merchant and supply ships. When it comes to plundering innocent traders, there's only one kind of sailor for the job.
    Pirates.

  9. The War of 1812 actually didn't occur JUST in 1812. there were also events that occurred before and after. Here's a little poem giving you a summary of all the events that took place: http://historytallks.blogspot.com/2014/11/a-poem-on-war-of-1812.html

  10. I think the war was pointless. No one won and no one lost except for the Indians. The British didn't even wanna fight in the war they already were fighting Napoleon and didn't have the army to spare to fight anyways but they were stronger than America still. Even though no one won they did both have significant wins for their country. America burned down the Canadian Parliament and kept the British from invading Baltimore. The British burned down the White House in return and I wrote about heat happened after the burning because the next event is what kept the British from almost completely destroying America.
